Understanding your septic system
Most septic systems have a concrete, fiberglass, or polyethylene septic tank.
First, the sewage from all plumbing drains flows into the septic tank.
Then the heavy solids settle to the bottom and the lighter solids rise to the top to form a scum layer.
Next, in the septic tank, the bacteria breaks down most of the organic matter.
However, the scum layer doesn’t naturally decompose and remains in the septic tank. Therefore, it is important to remove these kinds of solids from the tanks periodically.
When they accumulate, they will overflow into the drainage field.
Hence, this can cause your drain-field to fail.
Sign your septic system is failing
Obviously, the first sign of septic system failure are slow-draining fixtures.
Tanks should generally be pumped every 3-5 years.
